On November 18, 2011, protestors on the University of California-Davis campus were pepper-sprayed by police and became a rallying cry for the Occupy movement. Now, the university has reached a preliminary $1 million settlement on the lawsuit emanating from the action. Under the preliminary settlement, each of the 21 student (or recent alumni) plaintiffs involved will get an award of $30,000 and the lawyers at the American Civil Liberties Union who brought the case will get $250,000. The settlement also requires $100,000 to be set aside for people who may have been injured but have not yet come forward. You can see a video of the incident here. Chancellor Linda Katehi has publicly apologized for what happened but the settlement also requires that she issue a formal written apology to each plaintiff. –Ruth McCambridge
