May 17, 2010; Source: Columbus Business Journal | A law in Ohio has resulted in a number of charter schools finding themselves at the mercy of their for-profit management company, the Akron based White Hat Management, LLC. The schools are alleging that a 2006 law gives the management company the power to unseat a charter school board wishing to break with the management company. Further, the schools allege that White Hat will not provide them with financial information about their own budgets and that the company owns all school equipment and buildings although they were bought with public funds. The schools are seeking to have the 2006 law declared unconstitutional, have the contracts made void and to have assets be returned to a more public domain.—Ruth McCambridge
