July 1, 2010; Source: Kaiser Polls | As some predicted, as the U.S. recovers from the rancor of the debate around health care reform and starts on implementation, public opinion is becoming more favorable to the measure. A Kaiser Family Foundation poll finds that public support of the legislation has increased by 7 percentage points from 41 percent to 48 percent in the course of the last month. This cycle is apparently familiar in highly charged social welfare legislation. Clearly, it is good for health centers, mental health systems, and other nonprofits readying themselves to implement the new legislation to have public support for their efforts but also this is instructive to all of us when it comes to understanding patterns of public opinion, legislation, and implementation in the area of social welfare.—Ruth McCambridge
