Police Raid Critical Mass Ride

November 3, 2010; Source: Gazzettes.com | In Long Beach, Calif. on October 29 a Critical Mass bike ride was stopped by police for safety violations. There were only 100 cyclists on this ride but police apparently issued 70 citations and impounded 21 bikes in an odd attempt to stop the group from peacefully celebrating cycling and asserting cyclists’ right to the road. One rider got a $500 dollar ticket for running a stop sign. Having been run down by a bike, I get the road safety thing, but this seems like overkill. What do you want to bet that this ride grows in popularity? Didn’t the Long Beach cops ever hear that repression breeds resistance?—Ruth McCambridge
