February 28, 2011; Source: Billboard Bits | Justin Bieber, teenage heart throb, social media fanatic, and one-time possessor of the world's most confounding bowl cut has announced that he's dedicating his 17th birthday to charity. In lieu of birthday presents, the teen idol is seeking to raise at least $17,000 for Charity:Water.

So far, Bieber has almost reached his goal, with $16,697 raised from 705 donations. Known for effusively praising of his fans, Bieber writes on the Charity:Water website, "I have had an incredible year and it is all due to the fans helping me live my dream. I'm turning 17 years old on Tuesday, and have so much to be grateful for!" Each donation is visible on the site where fans can write messages to the birthday boy.

Bieber, who The Observer calls more influential on social media than Barack Obama and the Dali Llama, is worth about $65.5 million according to celebritynetworth.com.

Happy Birthday, Justin. If you need someone to jump out of your birthday cake, you know where to find me.—Kristin Barrali

It is clear Bieber fever has found its way to the nonprofit sector. How cool would it be if it became the norm for the 17th birthday to be dedicated to charity. It could mean millions of dollars donated to charities every year and a focus by teenagers on the causes around them. Perhaps NPQ could help spread the idea? Thanks for this brilliant reporting.
