June 7, 2011; Source: Hawaii 24/7 | Since its founding in 1976, the Habitat for Humanity network has built 400,000 houses internationally, providing housing for 2 million. In 2010 it closed on 6,032 units in the U.S., earning it a top spot on Builder Magazine’s BUILDER 100 list. The list is made up of the largest homebuilders in the country. This is not the first time Habitat has made the top ten on the list; it placed eighth in 2009 with 5,294 closings. Habitat may have gotten a boost in the ratings by the general lull in homebuilding but not by much – even in 2005 they were ranked 18th and they have been climbing yearly ever since. Habitat is not the only nonprofit on the 2010 BUILDER 100 list. Check it out.—Ruth McCambridge
