Of her forthcoming memoir about being shot in the head by the Taliban for advancing the idea that girls in Pakistan deserved a chance to receive an education, Malala Yousafzai says, “I hope the book will reach people around the world, so they realize how difficult it is for some children to get access to education. I want to tell my story, but it will also be the story of 61 million children who can’t get education.” In the U.S., the book will be published by Little, Brown and Company, where executive Michael Pietsch has high hopes for Malala’s words to “open minds, enlarge hearts, and eventually allow more girls and boys to receive the education they hunger for.”

The BBC reports that the book deal is worth approximately $3 million. It is not yet clear whether book sales proceeds will go to the Malala Fund, the charity that the NGO Vital Voices has established to provide funding to nonprofits and others working on education issues. You can see a video of this remarkable teenaged girl discussing her recovery and the establishment of the Malala Fund here:

On its website, the Malala Fund notes that, prior to being shot in the face, Yousafzai was working on building an organization to help girls attend school as opposed to being forced into a life of domestic labor. The charity will pick up this goal where Malala left off and plans to deliver its first grant this spring. –Mike Keefe-Feldman
