Grants

Warren Buffett’s sister, Doris Buffett, and his grandnephew, Alex Buffett Rozek, are enlisting help from their online students this summer to help give their money away. The Learning by Giving Foundation’s Massive Online Open Course (MOOC), GivingWithPurpose, is providing a free online six-class philanthropy course that will educate students on how to invest in charity and break down grants. After completing this unique course, students will be able to produce grant proposals, which will then be rated by other students and considered by the Learning by Giving Foundation.

The class is modeled after thirty classes the Learning by Giving Foundation have sponsored at colleges across the nation; each course receives a $10,000 grant for students to invest. Rozek explained that people can sign up for the class as individuals or teams, and teams of 25–100 will be given dedicated group funding. Rozek feels many nonprofits lack resources to effectively research grants. “They can get grants using these students for free,” he said. “The class is a way to give students the resources they need and then give them the money.”

If that isn’t enough incentive to sign up, Warren Buffett himself will be participating as a guest speaker, along with Doris Buffett, Cal Ripken, Jr., and additional other philanthropists. Any interested philanthropists or those wanting to learn more about philanthropy can pre-register for the course online today. Registration is unlimited.—Aine Creedon
