Nonprofit Growth Outpaces For-Profits in U.S.

Although the overall economy has been expanding slowly, the nonprofit sector is vibrant, according to a recent report in the New York Times.

From 2001 to 2011, the Times reports that the number of nonprofits in the United States grew 25 percent, while the number of for-profit businesses rose by half a percent, quoting recent figures compiled by the Urban Institute.

There are still four times as many businesses as nonprofits, but over that decade-long span, nonprofits also outpaced businesses in the percentage growth in hiring, wages, and contribution to the gross domestic product, the paper quotes the Urban Institute as having found.

About 1.6 million nonprofits employed 10 percent of the domestic work force in 2010 and comprised five percent of GDP. Nonprofits are exempt from corporate taxes, but are otherwise diverse—most are charities, for which donations are tax-deductible, but the sector also includes advocacy groups that are not charities and for which contributions are not tax-deductible.

The Times theorizes some reasons as to why nonprofits have multiplied faster than for-profit businesses:

  • As the population ages, greater demand for healthcare services drives growth in hospitals and health care organizations, many of which are nonprofits.
  • Charities focused on the needs of poorer Americans have experienced higher demand after the Great Recession.
  • Family foundations have grown in popularity, providing a “convenient repository for untaxed wealth that often remains under the control of the donor.”

“Because none of these factors seems ripe for change, it seems likely that nonprofits will play a growing role in the economy,” the Times writer concludes.

    At first glance, I wanted to celebrate. I specialize in the nonprofit sector and am thrilled to see that employment opportunities in the sector are improving. Once I re-read the article, however, I realized there may be another angle to this. I specialize in nonprofits, but international nonprofits. In under-developed and developing countries the rule goes that if you cannot find a job, you start a nonprofit. I am not being disrespectful for flippant. It is a fact that in some countries the nonprofit sector is the largest employer. The access to aid and grant money can ensure an livelihood. Considering the income disparity that is a real phenomenon in the U.S. (despite those who wish to deny it), I have to wonder if we are sinking rather than gaining.

    The Regional Foundation Center of the Free Library of Philadelphia has been visited by many customers asking for help with starting a nonprofit. Often we hear that their position at a for profit had been downsized as a result of the Great Recession. Others merely state that “looking for a change” has fueled their decision to follow the NP route. I believe these circumstances fall under your category of “much simpler explanations” stated above. We attempt to convince these customers that they must have a passion for the cause their nonprofit will address, patience during their nonprofit’s inception, and prepare for more work & longer hours than had ever previously been demanded of them. Without determination and dedication, the time and money they invested in the early development process may be to no avail. They should first gain insight into the not for profit sector by volunteering or acquiring a part time position.
