To answer the question in the article’s title: authoritarians care little about what constituents think. The gap between what Republican Senators think about support for their healthcare plan and what people actually think is a result of the Republicans’ disregard for holding town hall meetings. Why be concerned about town halls if you don’t care about popular opinion? The Republicans are so afraid of losing power gained from what increasingly appears to be an illegitimate election, that they are willing to disregard the People.

What does this political game-playing have to do with nonprofits? Nonprofits commonly speak for the People, or at least a portion of the People. If representatives no longer care about popular opinion, nonprofits will find it much more difficult to accomplish their goals.
