At NPQ, our goal is not to be cheerleaders for the nonprofit sector. Being a nonprofit is a tax status, not a synonym for virtue. That said, there is real valor and value in social movements, in nonprofits, and the people within them. The below picks highlight some of those movement and nonprofit leaders, workers, and activists who are making a difference in our communities.

The stories below offer a mix of approaches. Some highlight the role of institutions— such as community land trusts and community development financial institutions—that offer practical tools that we can use to improve racial and economic justice in our communities today. Others focus more broadly on offering strategies, insights, and analysis that address the many challenges communities, nonprofits, and movements face—and may lead you to consider your own strategy and work in a new light.
