City officials envision a family friendly city center and apparently the YMCA has done its fair share to make the venture a success. According to the Record-Journal article linked to above, “The Meriden YMCA is responsible for most of the growth downtown.” NPQ notes this article because it exhibits an unusual recognition of the role that nonprofits can play in a local economy.—Ruth McCambridge
