October 11, 2011; Source: News Leader | In Virginia, the United Way of Greater Augusta has raised its goal for this year, to reflect the fact that it was able to exceed its 2010 goal of $600,000 by 10 percent. This year they will set the goal at $700,000, a small figure, perhaps, next to some United Ways in larger areas, but one that speaks to the closeness of the community it serves and to a collective understanding of the increased need in that community. The UWGA finds approximately two-dozen organizations. “People are feeling there are people they know who are impacted” by the recession, commented United Way executive director Cynthia Pritchard. “It’s very real. It’s neighbors. It’s friends. It’s families.”—Ruth McCambridge
