One more problem with skills-based volunteering is when companies require that the organization use their volunteers in order for them to receive a grant. There are many organizations that have very strict government imposed guidelines on whom they employ – for example, if the organization works with children, there are requirements around background checks; or if they work with mentally challenged individuals, there are requirements around social worker backgrounds. Because of these restrictions, they can’t use random volunteers, no matter how skilled they may be professionally.
