Following the Ferguson and Eric Garner protests, trending hashtags #CrimingWhileWhite and #AliveWhileBlack emerged to illustrate the two very different relationships whites and blacks have with law enforcement. The phenomenon of the two hashtags shows an apparent pattern of uneven enforcement. While there were some annoyed rumblings that the very difficult issue of institutional racism is simplified, the social media reaction has been generally positive. We thought a juxtaposition of the two hashtags placed side by side would best represent the dichotomy of these two human experiences.
