NPQ is always interested in the ways in which people are engaged in collective social action, so the extraordinary Famine Hero Rally in Greater Kaohsiung, Taiwan on Saturday drew our attention. This is the rally’s 24th year, and the more than 50,000 participants reportedly ranged from the age of three to 67. Participants fasted for 30 hours, sleeping at the site, to raise awareness of those affected by hunger, war, natural disasters and disease in Taiwan and abroad.

The rally sought to raise more than $13 million dollars this year. –Ruth McCambridge
