July 13, 2010; Source: The Doings Clarendon Hills | The Nonprofit Newswire has been following what has been happening for United Ways around the country during this recession including what may be an increasing number of mergers. This one in Illinois brings together four United Ways that cover 65 communities. Spokespeople say that the move is intended to achieve economies of scale, although plans have the merged organization hiring additional staff. One of the external realities that may have played a part in the move is the recent loss of Park National Bank, which was one of the largest donors to one of the partners. Another merger for one of the partners was accomplished in 2008—really making this a merger of five United Ways.—Ruth McCambridge
