This disaster makes Haitians even more vulnerable to exploitation and enslavement, which in turn furthers economic and environmental disintegration, which makes even more people vulnerable. Haiti is 8th in the percentage of enslaved persons in its population, according to the 2016 Global Slavery Index. Children are especially likely to be exploited in the restavek system, in which children whose parents can’t afford to feed and educate them send them for domestic labor jobs. In return, the children are supposed to be provided with food, lodging, and schooling. In reality, this rarely happens and the children are exploited and abused.
