November 28,

The following graph appears in the 2014 edition of Minnesota Nonprofit Salary and Benefits Survey. We wanted to share it with you in advance of some work we want to do on nonprofit compensation ratios—that is, the fairness of the pay ranges in individual nonprofit organizations. Compensation ratios are, of course, generally brought up in relation to large for-profit corporations, but problems with differentials between the highest and lowest paid nonprofit workers in some organizations have also emerged as an issue over this past year.

Here is our question: Do you know of areas where we may wish to focus this inquiry? Groups or types of groups where ratios are more skewed? Help us consider the questions.

Our hope is to work with other groups on this issue over the next year, most notably the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN).—Ruth McCambridge
