March 8, 2010; Lifesitenews.com | The NPQ Newswire has been following the surfacing of proposals to levy fees and taxes on nonprofits for months but this is definitely one of the more unusual proposals. The Kansas legislature is considering lifting the sales tax exemption only as it applies to religious nonprofits. The Catholic Bishops in Kansas are protesting the proposal with the now predictable arguments about the value their institutions bring to community but here augmented with an argument that such a move may be discriminatory and unconstitutional.—Ruth McCambridge
