June 3, 2010; Source: Rome Observer | So many charity scams pop up in the wake of disaster that the FBI has created a unit called the National Center for Disaster Fraud, established after Hurricane Katrina. The BP oil spill has engendered another wave of this abhorrent exploitation and to counter it the Oil Spill Fraud Task Force which includes the aforementioned FBI unit and a number of representatives from more local law enforcement bodies. There are so many levels at which such scams are destructive, it is difficult to list them all.—Ruth McCambridge
