April 11, 2010; Mansfield News Journal | An anonymous donor, purportedly a local businessman, has given $20,000 to the Mansfield, Ohio sheriff’s department which has faced devastating cuts that it is trying to mitigate. The donation is meant to give the Sheriff a few months to get that done. From the article: “The department plans to have a single two-man cruiser patrolling 500 square miles after the layoffs. The cuts—49 employees—come in the wake of the sheriff’s budget being slashed from $3.2 million in 2009 to $1.6 million for 2010.” The Nonprofit Newswire has documented a similar case recently where a charter school donated enough to a local public school to allow them to save their recreational programs. We wonder if this may become a trend as public agencies become increasingly weakened?—Ruth McCambridge
