How about the fact that a quarterly food giveaway in Wilson, N.C., earlier this week saw more than 300 people lined up outside before the doors opened at the Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC). The nonprofit, located east of Raleigh, says it usually sees its largest numbers of people at Thanksgiving, but even more showed up on Wednesday. “Standing in line for more than three hours to get a bag of food, it says that things are a little rough,” OIC of Wilson founder and chief executive Howard Jones said. Along with food, the center offers health screening on giveaway days. This time the center had a 10 percent increase over the last screenings in November. By 11:30 a.m, the center had given away all its food for the day, one 15-pound bag each to some 2,000 families.—Bruce Trachtenberg
