August 9, 2010; Source: Toronto Sun | The Toronto Sun suggests that Buffet and Gates may need to add Canada’s other 54 billionaires to its “giving pledge” invitation list. The one Canadian born billionaire who has signed the pledge to give away half his fortune is Jeff Skoll, who falls ninth on the list of wealthy Canadians. This article suggests that the timing’s perfect since Canada has become much more philanthropic in the last decade, more than doubling its level of giving from $5.5 billion to $12 billion yearly. Actually, if the Thomson clan (the family whose crown jewel is its majority stake in Thomson Reuters media group) gave away half of its fortune, the Canadians could just about double that level of giving next year!—Ruth McCambridge
