August 15, 2010; Source: The Bellingham Herald | PBS is in the process of filming a special to air November 18 on how to develop economies that result in more sustainable communities in the wake of the recession. One of the cities they are featuring is Bellingham, Wash. where a combination of co-ops, green businesses, and businesses employing local labor enrich the local economy. Also featured will be Austin, Texas; Portland, Maine; St. Paul, Minn. and Berkeley, Calif. Post financial meltdown, nonprofits should be claiming seats at the table and central roles in rebuilding local economies so that they are more economically just.—Ruth McCambridge
