Remaking the Economic System in Puerto Rico: A Case Study

Steve Dubb
August 1, 2019

In May, NPQ hosted a webinar focusing on how to rebuild Puerto Rico’s economy in a way that would meet community needs. In light of the recent citizen mobilization that toppled the island’s governor this past month, we believe that the messages delivered in that webinar from leading Puerto Rican activists are more important than ever.

The webinar features an interview by NPQ senior editor Cyndi Suarez of Dr. Nelson Colón of the Fundación Comunitaria de Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico Community Foundation), who talks about the potential for equity and an energy revolution on the island.

Following the interview, NPQ senior editor Steve Dubb moderates a panel that lifts up stories from three leading Puerto Rico practitioner-experts who, through economic policy research and advocacy, community-based energy activism, and community land ownership are helping birth new forms of equitable, democratic, community-based economic development.

In the months and years to come, the work of Puerto Ricans to build a more just economic system will require many changes—including regularization of housing and land tenure, changes in government economic policy, the fostering of partnerships that build community wealth and foster community ownership, and the development of sustainable community-based energy generation.

On this webinar, you will hear from four advocates who will address each of these areas, as well as articulate their visions of a rising, more democratic and community-based Puerto Rico. Learn more about how Puerto Ricans view the challenges they face from the four following individuals:

  • Nelson Colón, President, Puerto Rico Community Foundation (Fundación Comunitaria de Puerto Rico)
  • Deepak Lamba-Nieves, Research Director, Center for a New Economy (Centro Para Una Nueva Economía)
  • Ruth Santiago, Attorney, Environmental Dialogue Committee (Comité Diálogo Ambiental)
  • Lyvia N. Rodríguez, Executive Director, Caño Martín Peña Community Land Trust (Fideicomiso de la Tierra del Caño Martín Peña)

About the author
Steve Dubb

Steve Dubb is senior editor of economic justice at NPQ, where he writes articles (including NPQ’s Economy Remix column), moderates Remaking the Economy webinars, and works to cultivate voices from the field and help them reach a broader audience. In particular, he is always looking for stories that illustrate ways to build a more just economy—whether from the labor movement or from cooperatives and other forms of solidarity economy organizing—as well as articles that offer thoughtful and incisive critiques of capitalism. Prior to coming to NPQ in 2017, Steve worked with cooperatives and nonprofits for over two decades, including twelve years at The Democracy Collaborative and three years as executive director of NASCO (North American Students of Cooperation). In his work, Steve has authored, co-authored, and edited numerous reports; participated in and facilitated learning cohorts; designed community building strategies; and helped build the field of community wealth building. Most recently, Steve coedited (with Raymond Foxworth) Invisible No More: Voices from Native America (Island Press, 2023). Steve is also the lead author of Building Wealth: The Asset-Based Approach to Solving Social and Economic Problems (Aspen 2005) and coauthor (with Rita Hodges) of The Road Half Traveled: University Engagement at a Crossroads, published by MSU Press in 2012. In 2016, Steve curated and authored Conversations on Community Wealth Building, a collection of interviews of community builders that Steve had conducted over the previous decade.
