In May, NPQ hosted a webinar focusing on how to rebuild Puerto Rico’s economy in a way that would meet community needs. In light of the recent citizen mobilization that toppled the island’s governor this past month, we believe that the messages delivered in that webinar from leading Puerto Rican activists are more important than ever.
The webinar features an interview by NPQ senior editor Cyndi Suarez of Dr. Nelson Colón of the Fundación Comunitaria de Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico Community Foundation), who talks about the potential for equity and an energy revolution on the island.
Following the interview, NPQ senior editor Steve Dubb moderates a panel that lifts up stories from three leading Puerto Rico practitioner-experts who, through economic policy research and advocacy, community-based energy activism, and community land ownership are helping birth new forms of equitable, democratic, community-based economic development.

In the months and years to come, the work of Puerto Ricans to build a more just economic system will require many changes—including regularization of housing and land tenure, changes in government economic policy, the fostering of partnerships that build community wealth and foster community ownership, and the development of sustainable community-based energy generation.
