I’m Sara Luterman, The 19th’s disability and aging reporter. I’m one of only a handful of openly disabled journalists dedicated to covering these issues. It’s exciting to be part of a burgeoning new beat and to be able to help shape it from the ground up. I am proud to help put “nothing about us without us,” a saying from the disability rights movement, into practice in journalism. I have been at the 19th since 2021 and was formerly our caregiving reporter. My work is award winning and has been nationally recognized. My reporting for The Nation was shortlisted for the Deadline Club Mosaic Award. In 2023, I was a National Press Foundation Long Term Care Crisis Fellow. Prior to my time at the 19th, I freelanced for outlets including The American Prospect, The Washington Post and Vox. I was also a contributing editor for the WNYC podcast Radiolab. I have an undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins and an MFA in poetry from the University of Maryland, College Park. I live in Washington, D.C., with my spouse and daughter. When I’m not reporting, I love playing video games, cooking and listening to the Mountain Goats.
