Whose Stories Do We Tell?

Dear NPQ Reader,

When I was 11, my cousin Diego moved in with us so he could attend an American high school. One night, as we were studying at the kitchen table, he let out a frustrated sigh.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“I know a lot of history,” he said, “but my teacher told me my history doesn’t matter.”

As NPQ’s interim Editor in Chief and CEO, I think constantly about whose stories and histories we choose to amplify—not only on our platforms but also within our own organization.

In 2025, NPQ will double down on bold, equity-driven leadership and management solutions for progressive, justice-focused nonprofits. But today, I want to share the story of our team—and the work we’ve done in 2024 to model the equity-centered leadership we champion.

In 2024, NPQ:

  • Launched a staff-driven Kitchen Cabinet to guide our organizational design work
  • Restructured our leadership model and began expanding our board
  • Established a compensation philosophy and equity-based pay structure
  • Integrated IT systems to improve collaboration and transparency
  • Built systems to measure culture, wellbeing, and feedback

These milestones reflect our deep belief that diverse stories and voices matter—and that equity-centered leadership isn’t just a concept. It’s a practice we aspire to every day.

But values-driven work like this takes time and resources.

If you have the financial security to do so, could you contribute to our $50,000 year-end fundraising goal? Any amount helps. Your donation directly supports our ability to expand narratives, amplify the histories of justice-driven leaders, and strengthen our team’s capacity to lead boldly from the inside out.

With gratitude,
