August 30, 2010; Source: Time | For Time magazine, the progress being made in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina five years ago contrasts with the open pit that still occupies the World Trade Center site after the September 11th a few years earlier. According to Time, “The visual open wound in lower Manhattan has contributed to the shocking and divisive fight over whether to allow the Islamic center to be built.” The proposed Islamic Center near the site of the 9/11 attacks has divided much of the nation on politics and religion, but Time noted President Obama’s commemorative speech at Xavier University lauding the recovery from Katrina and the bipartisan crowd that extolled the work of volunteers and nonprofits. It’s all well and good to see President Obama and Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, a potential Republican opponent in 2012, cheek to jowl at Xavier, but much remains to be done in and around New Orleans to finish the rebuilding that is many years—and hundreds of thousands of former residents—away from being completed.—Rick Cohen
