March 3, 2010; Crain’s New York Business | If findings of a survey of New York’s nonprofit community prove correct, local charities soon will be breaking out in a chorus of “Happy Days Are Here Again.” The nonprofit recruiting firm, Professionals for Nonprofits, reports that some 60 percent of nonprofits responding to its annual survey say they plan to hire in 2010. In addition, more than half of respondents expect salaries to increase over the coming year. Gayle Brandel, president of Professionals for Nonprofits, said the firm’s survey also found that organizations are feeling much better about the future than they did just a year ago. “Nonprofits are looking ahead and there seems to be a lot of optimism and activity in the sector.” One of the strongest indicators of the growing cheer: an astounding 93 percent of the 800 respondents said they think the worst is over. If, indeed, these findings bear out over time, we can imagine that Professionals for Nonprofits themselves might be heard singing, “The skies above are clear again . . . So let’s sing a song of cheer again . . . Happy days are here again.”—Bruce Trachtenberg
