March 11, 2010; Star News Online | We’ve all heard the story of the over-paid nonprofit CEO. North Carolina made headlines with the forced resignation of the CEO of the Charlotte-area United Way of Central Carolina for her $1.2 million compensation package. But what are the leaders of nonprofits in North Carolina really making? The N.C. Center for Nonprofits released the findings of its nonprofit compensation and benefits survey and surprise! Not all CEO’s are rolling in the dough. The median total cash compensation for CEOs is $60,000. According to Jane Kendall, the Center’s president, the group undertook the study to give nonprofit boards and executives the data they need to set appropriate salaries at all staff levels. Not surprisingly, CEOs from nonprofits with budgets below $300,000 earned less (median $40,523) while those from groups with an annual operating budget of $10 million or more earned much more (median $151,197). Also found in the study is that turnover in the state’s nonprofits is half the national average and that three-quarters of nonprofits offer medical coverage.”—Kristin Barrali
