Dear friends of NPQ,
As you know, Nonprofit Quarterly (NPQ) advances conversations and practice in civil society—as manifested in nonprofits, social movements, and philanthropy. Our governance work is always in the interest of that mission. We want to share a change to our leadership model.
For almost a decade, NPQ has operated under a co-leadership model, successfully driving many initiatives that furthered our mission. While our organization remains strong, we recognize the challenges and evolving trends within the nonprofit media industry. To stay competitive and resilient, we must adapt.
Today, we are announcing a strategic restructuring. We are moving to a single-leadership model with the appointment of a chief executive officer. This change is designed to ensure our long-term sustainability and enhance our impact.
As part of this restructuring:
- Co-President Joel Toner previously announced his planned retirement in early 2025. He will transition to Publisher Emeritus, overseeing the business side of publishing and assisting with the leadership transition as the board searches for our new chief executive officer.
- Co-President Cyndi Suarez is no longer with NPQ. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Cyndi for her significant contributions, which have profoundly influenced NPQ’s focus and relevance. The board is thankful for her dedication and contributions.
In addition to these leadership changes, our governing board will grow to meet NPQ’s evolving needs. Currently, our board consists of seven members from the nonprofit, philanthropic, and business sectors, including three who joined in 2023. The board will expand, bringing expertise in critical areas and ensuring diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
During this transition, we remain committed to our current editorial direction and will continue to publish critical stories for and about the nonprofit and civil sectors and philanthropy, as well as lead monthly webinars and training for nonprofit, philanthropy, and justice leadership and members, publish our quarterly magazine, and provide weekly newsletters on nonprofit leadership and justice. Your access to these essential resources will remain uninterrupted.
NPQ envisions a world in which we live in an active democracy whose values are fully grounded in human rights, economic and social justice, racial equity, and thriving communities. As our nation prepares for a critical election year, we remain dedicated to helping our readership explore the workings of nonprofits, civil sector movements, and philanthropy. We deeply value your continued support and understanding during this transition, and we are confident that together, we will navigate this change successfully.
We appreciate your commitment to this vital work.
In solidarity,
The Board of Directors, NPQ
