We started by looking at conflicts of interest, and quickly realized that the last thing we wanted to do was to give the impression that self-interest in general in nonprofits is objectionable. Sometimes it is a bad thing—as when individuals prioritize their own interest over the collective interest they are meant to serve. But self-interest in the sector is not always inappropriate. In fact, the most grassroots elements of the sector are largely made up of groups pursuing collective self-interest.
