• The economic exploitation of working people in the nonprofit sector, in sharp contrast to the salaries of its elite executives and those in philanthropic foundations, is as intentional as the efforts to keep wages in capitalism low in general and, in particular, for women and people of color. Among other reasons, nonprofit wages can be kept low because most work is done by those without the power and protection of unions
which are still somewhat viable in the public sector. In addition, the nonprofit sector’s “mythological calling” to dedicate your life to helping others, without concern for making much money, supports keeping wages
at a minimum rather than at levels necessary for healthy families. And, do we really need extremely wealthy
people celebrating “volunteerism” and keeping us grateful for their charity as the best way to care for people and help their communities?
