This Analysis is probably right, but only as far as it goes. As wonderful creation as the United Way was, it’s increasingly become obsolete regardless of its strategic choices. A generation or two ago it was quite difficult for an ordinary person to determine where to make a charitable contribution. Information was hard to come by, and you really needed the advice guidance of knowledgeable people to determine the best choices. That’s simply no longer the case. Almost anybody can quickly and easily find a charity they care about and get a very good sense of whether it is worthy of their gift or not.
