February 25, 2010; KTUU | Want an example of a successful public/nonprofit partnership? Alaska has a great one on display. However, due to the very local nature of the need being addressed, it isn’t likely to be duplicated in many other places around the nation. The city of Anchorage is teaming up with the Alaska Moose Federation to dispose of moose struck and killed by vehicles, and doing so in a very novel way. In past years, individual charities that received the moose meat were responsible for hauling away the road kill. Often that meant police would have to be on the scene for hours until the salvage operation was done. Now, thanks to a grant from the state, the Alaska Moose Federation has been able to outfit four trucks with winches that make easy work of removing the dead animals. These days, the average clean up takes about seven minutes. Each year, some 100 moose die after being hit by cars and trucks.—Bruce Trachtenberg
