Eeek! In an article about inequality, women’s rights is glaringly absent. This is not something that can just be grouped in together with a sweeping comment about fair pay. The women’s pay gap is a pervasive issue which non-profits in particular need to pro-actively address.

Exactly. Nonprofits that fight minimum wage increases are doing a disservice to their communities and the people who support them. If they are unwilling to pay their own employees a livable wage, can paternalism toward clients be far behind?

I wholeheartedly agree! Nonprofits work to change social conditions, and that can’t happen by using the same techniques that created unwanted circumstances in the first place. It seems to me the underlying theme in these recommendations is systems thinking. Effective leadership in complex adaptive systems include adaptiveness, coevolution (affecting the environment while adpating to it), and positive disruption. Effective leadership means change, but taking the initiative on change, not waiting for it to happen.
