Dear NPQ readers:
As most of you know, our NPQ community suffered an enormous loss yesterday in the unexpected death of our dear friend and colleague, Rick Cohen. We are taking today to mourn but will be back with you tomorrow, on Thursday. We trust that you understand.
We hope that readers will continue to add to the outpouring of stories and thoughts that followed our announcement of Rick’s death.

Meanwhile, we want to call your attention to two of the last pieces Rick wrote, about Paris and the posturing of U.S. politicians on the matter of Syrian refugees. But Rick’s range was phenomenally wide, as you will see in the collection below. Even so, we had to leave some of his “beats” out for reasons of space. We encourage readers to share their own favorite articles over social media today.
These articles epitomize Rick’s unique mix of political courage, deep knowledge of context, and attention to the responsibilities of all of us in nonprofits, philanthropy, and all of civil society to actively do always what is right rather than what is expedient or comfortable.
In deep sadness, the staff and board of NPQ
