“Of Liberty” is a reimagining of the Statue of Liberty, focusing on and celebrating the bodies that are often overlooked and devalued in American society. The term “statue” has been intentionally removed from the title because our bodies, our culture, and our ways of being are not static—they move freely, grow, and evolve with each new generation.
Unlike the more palatable immigration stories that this country often highlights, my ancestors did not receive a warm welcome when they arrived on this land in chains, nor were they accepted even after gaining their freedom. Yet, the culture and resilience we managed to cultivate here, despite the odds against us, have been glorious!
