I’d be curious to see how the numbers work for SMALL community-based organizations. We are very grassroots in nature, and have a great board, but some still talk about trying to get “names” for the board to help with fundraising. Our budget is about $250K a year!

The results are not really that surprising. As a governance consultant, I found that those organizations that have dedicated board members with passion and commitment do amazingly well in outreach, fundraising, supporting the ED, and more. I think part of the reason is that they are tapping into new circle of donors for the organizations — many are circles that have not been asked before. But most importantly, these Board member have the passion and take their responsibility seriously. Usually they are on only one or two Boards which allows them to be great Board members.
