Shirley Sherrod: “I’m the lady USDA fired”—and the Nonprofit Leader We Should All Admire

altThere are some real modern life heroes and heroines in the nonprofit sector. Topping the list has to be Shirley Sherrod of the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund, the black farmers class action litigation, known to many as the victim of Breitbart's highly edited attack video that led to her firing by Agriculture Secretary Vilsack.

Giving USA 2011: Who Gave, How Much, and To Whom in 2010?

Welcome to the Giving USA 2011 panel discussion. Live Streaming and Live Chatting will begin at noon EST on Thursday, June 23.

What do the results of the Giving USA 2011 numbers tell us about who we are, where philanthropy is going, and what fundraisers can expect of 2011?

If you look below the headlines, the Giving USA numbers this year suggest that there is not only a crisis of declining charitable giving reaching human services or social safety net groups, but also a deepening class divide in our society that is reflected in both charitable giving and in the nonprofit sector.

This year's panel includes: Patrick M. Rooney, executive director at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University; Ruth McCambridge, editor of the Nonprofit Quarterly; Wendy McGrady, vice president of the Curtis Group; and Tom Pollak, program director at the Urban Institute.

This live online event is hosted by the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, the organization that compiled "Giving USA," and Hudson Institute's Bradley Center for Philanthropy and Civic Renewal.
