“Things We Carried” is a collage that celebrates the spirit of Black resistance, resilience, and creativity. When enslaved Africans arrived in the Americas, their bodies weren’t the only things transported across the Atlantic Ocean. Along with them came a spirit that could not be ignored—a flame that refused to be extinguished. To this day, that spirit lives on in our art, agricultural practices, spirituality, and community—everything.
