March 2, 2010; The Commercial Appeal | Small nonprofit theaters can ride a precipitous edge, staging productions that would be deemed far too experimental or disturbing for mainstream theaters. This story, though, nearly brought me to tears. Playback Memphis is an improvisational theater troupe “that turns personal stories from audience members into live theater.” It is one of 60 Playback troupes around the world. Apparently, they often partner with nonprofits to bring the stories of nonprofit constituents to life on stage. This particular evening in question the troupe was performing for Victims to Victory, “a support group for families who have lost loved ones to homicide.” Making change often entails helping others to empathize as a first step to making common cause. This improv effort seems like a particularly creative approach to help forge those kinds of powerful human connections.—Ruth McCambridge
