February 9, 2010; The Madison County Courier | It seems the University is still a place of virtue. At least on two campuses—one in Massachusetts, the other in New York. The Brennen Foundation of Ohio, with ties to Colgate University, has donated $50,000 to the The Student Philanthropy Council (SPC) for students to study philanthropy and ultimately give $10,000 each year to nonprofits in the Madison County region. An RFP is available here. And in Cambridge, Harvard Students are reaching out to some of the city’s homeless population by including them in weekly literary workshops held at a homeless shelter in Harvard Square. The Harvard Advocate has created a “community outreach” arm equipped with a coordinator who said the initiative was to include those who “might not logically feel like they are members of the Advocate community.” Further, the Harvard Crimson article states, “Although loosely organized around a consideration of literary genres, the workshops have morphed into a space for residents of the shelter to share their histories and experiences with members.” Harvard Square has a literary history that includes the area homeless. The well-known publication, Spare Change, is an alternative paper that’s written and sold by the area’s homeless residents.—Kristin Barrali
