In a short space, Debby does a very nice job of summarizing the path of rural philanthropic initiatives. Yes, the Lilly grant is symbolically important but the dollars are relatively small and the measures of success will not be what happens with the direct grant money but with creating a long-term path for core community improvement as the Danville example illustrates. Fingers crossed that the dollars will get to the rural communities and not be lost in the translation between the funder and the intended beneficiaries!
