February 15, 2010; US Magazine | They say that celebrities live and die for public attention. But even after her death, actress Brittany Murphy may be getting a tad bit more attention than she’d like. According to US Magazine, a charity formed by Murphy’s husband, Simon Monjack and mother, Sharon Murphy, was forced to shut down its Web site late last week after the online gossip news service TMZ.com found that the Brittany Murphy Foundation hadn’t registered as a charity with the IRS or state of California. Before it shut down, the site had been collecting donations for children’s arts education for at least a month. According to published reports, the site was taken offline after it was contacted by TMZ.com for comment about the allegations but then re-launched shortly with a message advising visitors that it would no longer accept donations “until we have our non-profit status approved before proceeding to insure that we can truly honor Brittany’s charitable desires.” The 32-year-old Murphy was found dead Dec. 20. She died from pneumonia exacerbated by multiple drug intoxication, according to the Los Angeles County Office Chief Investigator.—Bruce Trachtenberg
